The Death of Traditional Manufacturing: How AI is Building Your Products with computer vision

In episode #28, Lucas Vandroux, mentioned in “Forbes 30 Under 30” is talking about how computer vision and AI in manufacturing and how it is slowly but surely changing the way all of our products are built. He has knowledge in computer vision, AI, LLM and manufacturing which great enterprises like ABB already used to excellence their production. He talks about the difference in production in Switzerland, Germany and China.

Who is Lucas?

Lucas Vandroux is a Swiss entrepreneur and AI engineer specializing in computer vision and machine learning. His work focuses on bridging the gap between AI research and real-world industrial applications.

Lucas began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Systems from EPFL Lausanne (2010–2014). Eager to deepen his expertise, he pursued a Master’s in Information Technology at ETH Zürich (2015–2018). During his master’s program, he expanded his horizons by conducting research at Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he focused on environment perception for autonomous driving—an area that would later shape his career in AI and automation.

In 2018, Lucas co-founded BlinkLabs, a company dedicated to creating a deep learning toolbox for system integrators in manufacturing. This innovative solution aimed to simplify the integration of AI technologies into industrial processes. Building on this success, Lucas launched his second venture, VIUN, in 2020. VIUN introduced an AI-powered defect catalog designed for Industry 4.0, enabling manufacturers to automate visual quality inspections with greater efficiency and precision.

Lucas’s groundbreaking work in AI and automation has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, he was honored as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 DACH, recognizing his impact on technology and innovation in the region. A year later, in 2023, he was named a BILANZ Digital Shaper – AI Generator, further cementing his reputation as a leader in the field of artificial intelligence.

With a passion for pushing the boundaries of technology, Lucas continues to drive innovation in manufacturing and beyond. His work not only helps industries embrace the future of automation but also inspires others to explore the transformative potential of AI. From autonomous driving research to revolutionizing quality inspection, Lucas’s journey is a testament to the power of curiosity, creativity, and determination.

Manufacturing AI computer vision

How does this work together?

Manufacturing and AI-powered computer vision transform modern product creation and inspection. Computer vision helps machines interpret visual data through advanced algorithms. It processes images and videos using deep learning models. This technology streamlines manufacturing processes and boosts quality control.

Visual quality inspection stands out as a primary application in manufacturing. Computer vision systems detect product defects on assembly lines. They analyze thousands of items per minute with exceptional accuracy. This reduces errors and operating costs. The systems spot scratches, misalignments, and missing parts instantly.

Robot guidance represents another vital use case in manufacturing. Computer vision enables precise robot navigation and manipulation. Robots can pick, place, and assemble parts accurately. This precision proves essential in automotive and electronics manufacturing.

AI analyzes visual equipment data to predictive maintenance needs. It spots potential issues before breakdowns occur. This reduces factory downtime significantly.

The combination of AI and computer vision delivers faster production speeds and superior quality. It reduces manufacturing costs across operations. These advances create smarter factories and drive Industry 4.0 forward.
